7. William MacLeod


BIOGRAPHY: Travelled with parents from Isle of Skye probably arriving in Charlottetown PEI in Sept. 1840 after which they soon settled on land at Hartsville PEI. He was a fisherman on the Grand Banks for many years and a correspondent with the fishing fleet for Charlottetown Guardian. After his marraige in 1874, he moved to the property adjacent to his parents home, where he lived for the next 36 years. He and his wife moved to Vancouver in June 1910 to be close to some of their children who had moved to Vancouver earlier.

BURIAL: He is buried as "Father" in bk 41 plot 11 at Mountain View Cemetery, Vancouver BC.

32. Roderick W MacLeod

BIOGRAPHY: Went west as a young man and stopped corresponding after several years. However, Elizabeth and Billie MacLeod supplied a photo of Rod taken with his brother David and a friend in Vancouver, BC. The photographer, A. Savard operated in Vancouver from 1896 to 1916. The BC Archives records the death of only one person with the name Roderick William MacLeod. This person was an unmarried halibut fisherman, residing on Porcher Island south of Prince Rupert BC who died in a restaurant in Prince Rupert on 16 April 1942 with no known next of kin. The cause of death was coronary thrombosis. The death certificate does not show an informant or a birth date but records his age as 58 which matches Roderick W MacLeod's known birth date of 8 Oct 1883.

Taught school at Springfield, Summerside and Hartsville schools in different periods between 1869 and 1894.
After 1894, moved to and lived the rest of his life in Quincy Mass.

Jane Armdale MacKay

BIOGRAPHY: After her husband's death in 1900 she purchased 10 acres of her brother-in-law, John Alexander MacLeod's farm on South Sumas Road in Atchelitz BC and with the help of some of her children, built a large house which was known as Armdale house. It was originally planned that part of the house would be used by daughter Rachel as a convelesance home for patients recovering from surgery, but was never used in this way. After Jane's death in 1931, the house was occupied by daughter Rachel and after her death in 1936, it was occupied by daughter Catherine Emma's family until the property was sold about 1951/3.

DEATH: Cause of death was valvular heart disease

BIRTH: Obituary states birthdate as 14 Jun 1853, but is more likely 1855, based on the 1910 US Census. His older brother Charles birthdate of 2 Feb1853 is considered accurate because it comes from an obituary which indicates both birthdate and age at time of death.

BIOGRAPHY: He arrived in San Francisco about 1881 and later moved to Portland Ore and The Dalles. He engaged in business in Oakesdale Wa and in 1898 moved to Goldendale Wa where he entered the mercantile business until 1904 when he was elected for two terms as county auditor. He was later elected Treasurer and Mayor of the City of Goldendale

During WW1 served as a member of the Military Exemption Tribunal for the local military area.
Councillor of Chilliwack BC in 1908-9 and 1914.
Reeve (Mayor) of Chilliwack BC on three separate occasions - 1915, 1922-24, and 1929-30.
Postmaster at South Sumas for about 15 years.
Unsuccessful candidate for the Provincial Party in the 1923 BC Provincial election.


BIRTH: The date of 9 Dec 1862 was obtained from the 1901 Census and a life insurance application form that John Alexander MacLeod completed on 22 Dec 1884 in Victoria, BC. The birth date of 9 Dec 1861 shown on the death certificate is considered to be a mistake by the informant.
