Descendants of John MacLeod of the Isle of Skye

Notes

2. Mary MacLeod

BIOGRAPHY: Travelled with husband Malcolm and son William from Isle of Skye to PEI probably arriving in Sept 1840, The PEI Genealogical Society Newsletter of Nov 1998 records that two ships, the Rother and the Ninth boarded passengers in Uig Bay, Isle of Skye, cleared customs in Tobermory and arrived in Charlottetown in mid Sept 1840. They may have originated on the Isle of Raasay because the death certificate of their son William records his birth at that location.

DEATH: Union Mutual Life Insurance Policy No 80714 issued to John A MacLeod 31 Dec 1884 records that his mother, Mary MacLeod died of typhus fever after one week of illness. However, at the time of her death in 1875, typhus fever was also being referred to as typhoid fever. About 1880, salmonella typhi, the typhoid bacillus found in contaminated food and water supplies was identified as the source of typhoid fever. Later, typhus fever was found to be caused by rickettsia organisms carried by ticks, fleas or lice. It is most probable that typhoid fever was the cause of Mary's death rather than typhus fever and therefore her cause of death is recorded herein as typhoid fever.

Malcolm MacLeod

BIOGRAPHY: Had a niece, Mrs Kate MacCannell (maiden name Bethune) living in Quincy Mass in 1910. She had a son Eben, born 1891.

BIRTH: Malcolm may have been born on the Isle of Raasay and been living there after he was married, because the death certificate of his oldest son, William, records his birth at that location.
